Budapest to Vienna – Day 23

This morning we got an extra forty five minutes sleep in. Our departure from Budapest was not until 0850. Rhian and I had another awesome breakfast down stairs then returned to get our bags. The tour group was waiting outside the hotel in the cold waiting for the bus. Kris got stuck in traffic so we froze.

The drive to Vienna was not too long and Kristzi played the movie Grease on the bus. We arrived in Vienna around 1pm. This gave us three hours of free time in Vienna. Rhian and I had lunch with Tyler, Jess, Rob and Lolly before hgeading off to do our own thing. Our own thing consited of Rhian shopping. However her shopping was mainly clothes for me.

I got a new jacket / trench coat. I don’t have one at home. Will have to make good use of it over here because I don’t think it gets cold enough to use at home. We will see. I also picked up another cardigan and three more T-shirts. Delays the washing by a few days. Rhian also got a new coat.

We met the tour bus again at 4pm to take us back to the hotel for check inn. Once we got to the hotel and checked in it turned out that the singles had got rooms with double beds. We changed rooms for one with an actual double bed but we lost out on the bathroom. We went from a descent bathroom to a tiny shoebox bathroom. Oh well.

We did not have long until getting a lift on the tour bus back into town. Some from the group were going to an optional dinner and Opera concert. Rhian and I (me) were not interested and spent most of the night wandering the streets just looking around. It is a pretty city like most european cities but I didn’t find it as good as Budapest or Paris.

We stopped for a quick beer and coffee at a cafe in front of a church. We then walked for a little more before finding a place for dinner called Medusa Restaurant & Club. It was a little expensive. The total bill came to about $100 euro. This is the same as we spent the previous day in Budapest. However it made up for it in the quality of the food. I had the pepper streak. It was not large but I think it is the best steak I have ever had. I don’t know how to describe it apart from it was perfect and melted in your mouth. You have too have had it to appreciate it.

After dinner we walked back to where we were meant to meet the bus. The bus was not there so we walked along the canal and into the park. We came across a film crew setting up to film something. They had all the lights and light boxes setup in the gardens of the park. We made our way back to the bus again which now was there but locked. Rhian wanted a coffee so we walked to the closes cafe / bar to the thearter where the others were. It cost us $15 euros. One coffee and one beer. Aparently a cover charge for the live music was included too. Pretty much $1 euro for each minute we were there.

We then went back and got on the bus to go to the hotel. The others were eight minutes late coming out of the concert. We went back to the hotel and published the blogs for the last four days then went to sleep.

Budapest – Day 22

Breakfast at the hotel was up there with the best we have had. There was anything and everything you could want for breakfast apart from pancakes. After breakfast a group of us headed out to visit the House Of Terror. House of Terror is a museum located at Andrássy út 60 in Budapest, Hungary. It contains exhibits related to the fascist and communist dictatorial regimes in 20th-century Hungary and is also a memorial to the victims of these regimes, including those detained, interrogated, tortured or killed in the building. Each room of the build is themed and has a page or more of information about the topic. We kept all the pages for dad to read when we get home. He loves all the history stuff. The most chilling rooms were down in the basement where the cells and the killing floor were. To think you are standing in a room where thousands of people were murdered is pretty sickening.

After the House of Terror we found a Cafe Bar called Incognito. Food was good and prices were not too bad. As with most cafe and pubs in Europe it had free WiFi so everyone had their phones out updating and reading Facebook. Was actually quick internet so I was able to check in on home. All seems well. Also got a short word with the house sitter that all is fine and Molly and Matilda are missing us. Aww. They sneak into the bedroom and hide in there. See if we will appear.

After lunch we went to a lolly store recommeded by our tour guide. Dad would be like a pig in shit with all the jubes. Rhian and I both filled a bag for the bus ride tomorrow. After our sugar hit we caught the metro back towards the hotel. I then went back to the hotel while Rhian stayed with Asmaa and did some shopping.

Once Rhian arrived back both of us fell asleep in the room for an hour or so until we woke up freezing. I jumped on Facebook and some were gathering in the lobby to go for dinner. I dragged Rhain up and we went down to meet them. Our tour guide told us of a restraunt up the road. We proceeded up the road to the restruant. Upon arrival the staff relocated a few tables in order to accomodate all 18 of us. I had a pasta and prawn dish which was not all that good but others seemed to enjoy their meals. The waiter got a big tip as everyone put all there left over coins that they had in the kitty. (Floren money is 1000 floren was about 3.4 euros) The meals and drinks that we had were about 10 euros, it was really cheap and we didn’t wait long at all for all the meals to come out. I

After dinner everyone headed back to the hotel for an early night. I think everyone was buggered and wanted a good nights sleep.

Ljubljana to Budapest – Day 21

Today we had an early start because the bus was to depart the hotel at 8am. I was feeling better today however Rhian was starting to feel a little off. Our tour guide Krisizti was very excited about today be for her we were going home. After our lunch stop we went into a very detailed talk about Budapest. I think the bus driver told her to take a breath more than once. She was very excited to tell us about her home.

When we arrived in Budapest we went straight into the driving tour. Our first stop was at Citadella. A fortress built on top of the hill. This also happens to be the highest point in Budapest and was located next to the hotel below. We got out and took some quick photos before piling back onto the bus for an hour driving the busy streets of Budapest. Krisizti was not able to talk fast enough telling us about every site we drove past. We also drove past the street her mum lives in.

After the driving tour we checked into our hotel. This hotel was four star accomodation and very large. It even has its own thermal baths located on the first level. However working of the lift this is actually the third level. We had an hour or so free before meeting for dinner. Turning on the TV in the room the first thing that comes up is that US Goverment is in shut down. Without actually knowing what was going on I told Rhain to transfer money on the Travel card in case this meant our dollar or the US dollar was about to dive. Rhian struggled with the website but eventually was able to exchange some more euros. Budapest uses Floren. While we were waiting for the money to transfer we went downstairs to the atm and exchanged just $100 Euro worth to last us our stay.

We then headed to dinner with the group. Many of the people at our table for dinner had the traditional dish of Goylash. It is not a stew and not a soup. It contains meat, noodles and vegetables, seasoned with paprika and other spices. Mine came with a noodle like stuff. Was very filling. I would have it again. Others had the 1kg of Chicken Snitzchel. The prize for finishing was a high five and hug from Krisizti. I think three people finished it however I believe Beck got some help from others.

After dinner we all went to a bar in town. The bar was in an old building that had been vacant but had been brought back and turned into a multi story pub. Unlike modern pubs in Australia that try to be old and rustic this place was. Rhian and I only had one drink. Hung around for a while then left around 11pm. Others stayed on until after 3am.

We arived back at the hotel and went to bed.
